What this is, and what you can do with it
chip-matrix is a non-commercial personal project. It is not a product, not a business, and not affiliated with anyone whose data it shows.
A personal, non-commercial project
- Built and run by David Kyojin Choo as a side project. There is no company behind it and no team.
- Nothing is sold and nothing is monetised. No ads, no payments, no subscriptions, no sponsored placement, and no data sold or shared with anyone.
- No affiliation or endorsement. chip-matrix is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting for IEEE, Crossref, OpenAlex, ORCID, the ISSCC / JSSC / CICC / VLSI / A-SSCC organising committees, or any publisher. Conference and journal names are used only to identify the venue a paper appeared in.
Where the data comes from
Every record here is assembled from two open sources. Nothing is scraped from behind a paywall.
What this project deliberately does not do
This is the part that shaped the whole design, so it is worth stating plainly.
- The IEEE Xplore API is not used. Its terms limit access to subscribing institutions, forbid distributing content “in a form that is harvestable by humans or machines”, and forbid presenting content in bulk. Indexing, searching and charting a corpus is bulk presentation by definition — so this project stays out of it entirely.
- No full text and no publisher PDFs are stored. There is no field in the database that could hold one. Every paper — all 30,730 of them — links out by DOI, and you read it through your own subscription or an open-access copy.
- Abstracts shown here come from OpenAlex under CC0, not from the publisher.
- No author biographies or contact details. Those live in the paper’s full text, which is subscription content.
Using what you find here
- The metadata keeps its own licence. Fields derived from OpenAlex are CC0 — public domain, no permission needed. Crossref metadata is open. Reuse those under their terms, not ours.
- Cite the source, not this site. If a number or figure from here ends up in your work, credit Crossref and OpenAlex — and the publisher for the papers themselves.
- The site’s own code and design are not covered by those licences. No open-source licence has been granted for them; ask first if you want to reuse them.
This data has holes, and you should know where
The index mirrors its sources and inherits their gaps. The cause is upstream: for some years the publisher simply never deposited the proceedings metadata. Enumerating every IEEE proceedings record Crossref holds for 1997 — 6,442 of them — turns up exactly eight ISSCC papers, and the same years are missing from OpenAlex and DBLP too. Where it is known to bite:
- CICC 2016 is missing entirely. DBLP covers CICC from 1998 to 2026 with that one year cut out of the middle — three independent bibliographies with the same hole.
- The VLSI Symposium is absent for 2009, 2011 and 2013.
- ISSCC is sparse between roughly 1989 and 2005. Some years hold only a handful of records — eight for 1997, thirteen for 2005 — while 1988 and 1990 are complete at 110 and 92. A short bar in that stretch reflects what was deposited, not what was presented at the conference.
Counts are therefore only as complete as what publishers deposited, and a venue’s apparent output in a given year can be an artefact of missing deposits rather than a real change. Please do not use this site as evidence in hiring, funding, evaluation or ranking decisions without checking the primary record. It is provided as is, with no warranty of accuracy, completeness or fitness for any purpose.

DOI, open-access and ORCID links take you to third parties — IEEE Xplore, OpenAlex, ORCID and other publishers. Their terms and privacy policies govern what happens there.
